How-To install MIUI or CyanogenMod 10 on a Nexus 7 (from Mac OS)

Google/Asus Nexus is a real cool piece of hardware. Let’s make it even cooler by flashing the ROM with a custom one!

In order to do so you will have to follow these steps:

  • Unlock the Bootloader,
  • Install a custom recovery,
  • Install the custom ROM from the custom recovery,
  • Reboot,
  • Pray,
  • Enjoy!

You will need the following tools:

  • One computer running MacOS or Windows or Linux,
  • One Android SDK,
  • One USB cable,
  • One (at least) cup of coffee/tea/whatever-you-like-to-drink,
  • One Nexus 7,
  • No screwdriver.

Now, let’s get to it!

1. Copy the Custom ROM to the Nexus 7 root folder

Plug your Nexus 7 to your computer via USB port.
Copy the custom ROM zip file to the Nexus 7 root folder. (Note that it is not the “real” root folder but the root folder as seen by the computer.).

2. Unlock the bootloader

Go to the platform-tools directory from a terminal prompt. It should look like this:
$ cd /Applications/android-sdk-macosx/platform-tools

Reboot:
$ ./adb reboot bootloader

$ ./fastboot oem unlock
(bootloader) erasing userdata...
(bootloader) erasing userdata done
(bootloader) erasing cache...
(bootloader) erasing cache done
(bootloader) unlocking...

Reboot.

3. Install the recovery

Copy the recovery img file (such as recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-grouper.img) in the platform-tools folder.
$ ./fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
sending 'recovery' (6480 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.913s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.380s]
finished. total time: 1.293s

$ ./fastboot reboot-bootloader
rebooting into bootloader...
OKAY [ 0.020s]
finished. total time: 0.020s

4. Install the custom ROM
